6 THINGS WE TAKE FOR GRANTED WITH SMART DEVICES
6 THINGS WE TAKE FOR GRANTED WITH SMART DEVICES
by Robbie Imes, 6 min read
These days, most people couldn’t imagine living without their smartphones. Our devices are our connection to the world, and they help us navigate our busy lives. Schedules and free time alike are managed with ease and efficiency thanks to these modern machines.
Do we even remember a time without smart devices? For some, the answer is no. But whatever your generation, we can imagine just how much less efficient our days might be if we didn’t have them. Connecting with friends and family would be very different. And language, math and science questions answered at our fingertips? Forget it! Having our devices, in a sense, makes us, dare I say, better?
But let’s forget all of that for a minute and ponder some of things we truly take for granted in life with our smart devices.
Constant Connection
Family, friends and loved ones are literally just a digital touch away. Whether it’s a text, phone call or a social media post or a video chat, we are always able to reach out and say hi.
Turn on your location services to share from anywhere, not to mention the maps that guide us safely and efficiently. Connectivity is everywhere, and without it, it might feel like we’ve gone back to the dark ages.

Always with Camera
With our smart device, we always have a camera on us to capture the best (and sometimes worst) moments of our lives. We will never miss a second, and never miss an opportunity to share. Expert editing and auto-capture options make our photos even better. Sharing has never been easier, either.
Some say if there’s no photo, it didn’t happen. Well, if we didn’t have smartphones with cameras, maybe nothing would happen at all? Who is to say?
Apps
So many apps and only one you! There are literally millions of applications available for your smart devices, each one doing something to make life easier and better.
From photo enhancing apps to lists to games to social media and more, there is an app for just about every important – and unimportant – thing in the world right now.

Health
This is a big one. Not only are there health-specific devices, there are apps and programs that can live on your smart phone to help manage your health.
Diets, exercise, heart rate, metabolism – your name it, an app for your smart device is out there. You are now able to be a healthier you through A.I. The machines are finally helping us. Back in the old days, you had to rely on a doctor’s visit – in person. Imagine that!

Text Culture
We are a culture of texters. DMs, video messages and good old-fashioned SMS, there’s never been an easier time to be in touch. Gone are the days of calling someone at home hoping to catch them. Now, you simply send a short message and it finds its way.
Texting has now even infiltrated our spoken language with LOLs and “laugh face emojis” conveying meaning easily from once complicated verbal exchanges. If you ever find yourself saying out loud “BRB,” people will know what it means.
Social Media
The ultimate way to connect, right from your phone. Facebook, Instagram, Tik Tok – whatever your platform, whatever it is that you have to share, the options are infinite. Both left-brained and right-brained people and everyone in between have found the power of social media to keep in touch or grow their careers.
Social media, we have learned, has the power to alter the fabric of our society, for better and for worse. In the “old days,” major social change could take years, but with the click of a thumb, tomorrow could be changed forever.
While this is in no way a definitive list of how smart devices have changed our lives, it’s a good start. We can be thankful that we have our devices at all. Life would be so different without them!
